The Interstate system in the state of Illinois consists of a network of 2,185 miles of highway corridors, of which 1,269 miles are classified as rural interstates. Due to the varying width of the right-of-ways, exact quantities of shoulder and median area are not available. However, my estimates show that there are over 58,000 acres of greenspace along the Interstates of Illinois.
Those thousands of acres of shoulders and medians are forgotten, underutilized spaces that we fly past at 70+ miles per hour, without giving them a second thought towards their potential productivity. This raises the question: what can we do to more fully utilize these shoulders and medians?
